We recently spoke to Gail Harris, a disaster solutions consultant and former Seattle-Metro area Emergency Manager. We asked her a few questions and she gave us the details on why she chose Takouba’s Emergency Management Incident Tracking system (EMIT).
Q: What were the main reasons you needed a service like EMIT?
A: Situational Awareness. We needed a system where people involved could easily update critical information—what is happening on the ground with the team involved in an incident and the decision makers in the Emergency Operations Center (EOC). An easier and more cost-effective way to coordinate everything connected with an incident—from resources to staffing—so we have the critical information needed to make the best decisions.
Q: What were your top questions before purchasing this platform?
Will it be hosted on a server or in the cloud?
Can we control the back-end?
Is it secure?
How hard will it be to customize?
The answers I received made EMIT the logical choice.
Q: How important is Microsoft® SharePoint as part of the solution? And what advantages does it offer over other web-based EOC management tools, like WebEOC?
A: The fact that it’s in the cloud (vs. being associated with an organization’s server) and its familiarity and comfort level as a platform. It’s a known product with a familiar interface. These are both needed for community partner involvement.
With built-in filters, we can control the look and feel of the on-screen environment.
Q: What are the features that make the EMIT platform a smart choice for Emergency Management?
A: Simplicity: It’s easy to learn. EOC staff often come from different disciplines to fill a critical position, so any incident management platform has to be easy to use.
Cost-effective. It’s relatively inexpensive with no annual fees!
A system that is open to community partners: Systems should be cloud-based and open to the community partners who need good situational awareness, such as police, utilities, and fire departments.
Flexibility: It was customized for our organization. And our IT staff can easily customize the EMIT interface.
Some computer products are expensive, have annual fees, and difficult to use. Not EMIT.
We would like to thank Gail for answering the questions above, and if you’re looking for an EOC management tool, her answers make your decision easier.
If you’re an emergency manager and are looking for inexpensive, easy-to-learn incident management software, take a look at EMIT one-stop incident tracking software.
